Gonna be some changes

Post by hallsofvallhalla »

I have decided after this game contest to take a short break and work on the site. I am going to change the front it COMPLETELY. I think a more interactive front end with user created content and the ability for users to upload and share things would be better.

Self-coded! Self-coded ftw!

You can also license my e-zine code :P But the version best for you is built off of SMF.

have no time for self coded and there are too many free options out there for me to even think of self coding one.

I am basically looking for a good system for user created news, places for users to upload files, have blogs, share pics, upload videos, tutorials, ect... Something along those lines.

The forums will not change.

Joomla is a good option for that methinks. Have a look at a couple extensions: HWDVideoShare, and jSeblod CCK. HWDVideoShare will allow users to share video, though your server needs to have FFMPEG and some other tools for converting video files. jSeblod will let you create a custom content construction kit pretty easily, so that your users can upload and manage articles.

Be careful with allowing users to upload and stream videos, that's going to use a lot of server resources. As an alternative, you might just use a content plugin for embedding youtube videos, maybe something like AllVideo (I think that's what it's called, it's been awhile).

There are also other options for CCK's that you may want to try, and plenty of plugins to create user profiles.

As far as CCK's go, K2 and Zoo are also good. Flexicontent is relatively new but looks promising as well.

The main thing you want to make sure of, before you go extension-happy like I usually do, is that they don't run different javascript libraries. You really wanna stick with one main library to avoid conflict issues, and that one is usually MooTools. Trust me this can help avoid major headaches.

What about BoonEx dolphin: http://www.boonex.com/dolphin/
I downloaded it once, but never got around to trying it. It's more for small social networking sites, but it claims to be able to also make "niche communities" which is what I assume indie resource is
