Ad sense
Anyone that knows me knows I hate ads and placing ads in forums. Recently my videos were accepted for google ad partnership so I figured I would try it on a couple just to see. Seems you can earn money just for views and the occasional click does happen. While I will never let the ads get in the way or overcome I figure 1 ad on the mainpage way out of the way could help pay for the site. To be honest I am more curious about how well it will do so this is mainly a collection of knowledge.
If it becomes bothersome just let me know. I WILL NOT place ads on the forums.

Sounds good to me! I am also interested to know how well a minimal ad setup may make.

I know with youtube they have to choose your video in which a few of mine have and so I am testing them. So far today the estimated earnings is $1.14, but after they take out the bots that hit the site and everything else it will be around $0.01....

I'm not sure how many regulars go to the front page - I've bookmarked the forum, myself. It depends if you get a fair bit of random traffic on the front page.
You might also want to consider project wonderful, as it doesn't use a click method but instead advertisers buy time in the ad slot via automated bidding (you can set your minimum bid as well). Also you can set the panel to have your own banner when no one is advertising. It depends on how heavy your site traffic is - for my sites, I'm pretty low, and I'd say that project wonderful does better (especially as you can withdraw after accumulating $10). Also the ads tend to be more interesting to look at, as they come from people who are making the product and are excited about it. And you can use PW in tandem with adsense, so you can try both at the same time, no probs.
And I, atleast, would be okay with an add at the bottom of the forum index.

I don't mind ads, well text ads, as long as it's not those stupid flash ads that know to spread over the entire web page perfectly covering a link you were just about to press. Man I hate those. Also if anyone is a slow reader like me and likes to highlight text as they read it, they'll hate this one for sure: I HATE IT WHEN A WHOLE ARTICLE IS JUST A GIANT LINK. I also hate those ads that hover in the center of the page covering exactly what you want to see, and even when you press the 3x3 pixel cross in the top corner to close it, it still opens the link anyway. I also hate those ads that know exactly what you want to buy.. they're the worst and should be banned. I now have 3 of the same "Limited edition" Megan Fox beach towels, simply because when I get high and it's crap weather like it has been for all summer here, all I can think about is the beach and women. And lets face it who wouldn't like to lay on top of Megan Fox. The stupid towels were supposed to be in the last chance May sale, still saw the add floating around last week only they had changed it from May to August. I could rant all day about ads actually.

Thought about adding some Amazon affiliate links as well? may offer a better return and cover the hosting ect?
