Dreamweaver missing features?

Post by alexrules01 »

Hi all. First off, i wasn't sure where to post this, so I have put it here for now.

I have this question for an assignment, and it asks "What features does a standalone FTP program have that the inbuilt FTP in Dreamweaver doesn’t?"
I have been searching the net for a while now and have come up with virtually nothing. Does any know or have an idea what Dreamweaver is missing, it would be great help, thanks!

Hmm...that is an awfully wide-open question, but it sounds like your teacher is looking for one thing in particular. Is it possible it comes from any reading you have done? Maybe it comes from something you are supposed to read? Was there a presentation on this material? There are a ton of ways that could likely be answered, but it sounds like your teacher wants one point specifically.

I have used Dreamweaver, and there are a ton of features that a high-end FTP program has that DW doesn't have, since FTP is just a feature itself in DW. I wouldn't even know where to start answering that.

Oh I see. Hmm, I believe then its probably from using the Dreamweaver FTP compared to Filezilla. I was playing around with the Dreamweaver FTP for the first time this morning and got it working. The only thing I found different was the not dragging and dropping of files and I had to tick the box for passive FTP. The only notes we have recieved on FTP was about FTP in general, not about a specific program.

You don't have a book or something for this class? It just sounds like the teacher is referencing something they have talked about, or some material. That would be like me asking "What feature is in Visual Studio that is not in Eclipse IDE". That could be answered 100 different ways! It seems if they wanted you to just find a feature that is in one and not in the other, it would have been worded like "Name a feature that is in Visual Studio that is not in Eclipse IDE". That wording would seem to hint that they want you to name one of many differences. When they say "the difference", it sounds so specific.

I don't really have any experience with Filezilla, unfortunately, and don't know how they differ.

Thats ok, thanks for the help anyway. No we don't have a book and haven't been given any documentation about how to use the FTP in Dreamweaver (and only a 3 minute video made by the teacher on Filezilla), so I'm just going to assume its some basic differences.

I would probably go with the fact that it is not drag'n'drop, unless you find something more important. That is a pretty important difference, I guess.

Prolly completely off-topic but I dont care: DreamWeaver sucks. Big Time.

Anyway, one of the key features that are missing is the user rights management for (S)FTP protocols. You have limited options to change ACL or user rights on the server you are connecting to. However, that`s a small issue considering it actually supports FTP access. Something not all IDE`s offer.

It`s a key feature but a minor issue, because once it`s set up, you are good to go regardless. Still, i dont like DW.
