Battle for Chernobyl aka The saving of Europe

Post by Jackolantern »

I am in the midst of watching a wonderful documentary on YouTube called The Battle of Chernobyl. 20 years after the accident, it was learned that a second, much more powerful explosion was a serious risk, and many people gave their lives to fight it. If it had happened, it would have killed entire populations immediately, and rendered all of Europe uninhabitable for hundreds of years. At one point the second blast was believed to have been stopped by a matter of hours.

A really interesting watch, and I highly recommend it. It has amazing interviews (including lengthy segments with Gorbachev!), tons of new footage and pictures (including video of the inside of the core), and a good narrative.

Wow, just watched the entire thing, that was great. I love this kind of history, and now I coincidentally have to read about the Cold War/Chernobyl for my AP World History class, fun stuff! :P

Glad you liked it! I watched it end-to-end in one sitting, too, and I normally divide up movies or documentaries I watch myself. I couldn't put it down!

nice find. I was just watching the life after hiroshima bomb and was interesting as well. Not many people talk about it or how much was lost because of it.

Nuclear power - where mans incapacity to believe they will eventually err comes in contact with something that wont lead to just a handful of fatalities.

That's the thing about an incompetent species - what else can you expect but them to be incompetent at recognising their own incompetentcy.
