[Unnamed] Business Simulation - Conceptual [Abandoned]

Have a project in the works but not much media? How about an idea you are turning into a project? Maybe a game design document you want to start with. This is the place.

[Unnamed] Business Simulation - Conceptual [Abandoned]

Post by Sharlenwar »

Okay, this game is going to be a PBBG that is going to use PHP, with maybe some AJAX and Impact. It is going to be Open-Source, which means I'll be posting up a downloadable copy of the game. Everyone will be welcome to it, if any of you experienced ones find any flaws, better ways of doing things, then please feel free to post, ask questions, etc. This will be a concrete game document as well, meaning that once everything is figured out, I will move forward as quickly creating the design.

Concept
Business Simulation style game, which will feel similar to games in the past such as Aerobiz and Transport Tycoon. Meaning that the game should be simple enough to go along, yet it will have complexity contained within as you understand the different parts of the game. Then using AJAX and Impact, I plan on creating a way for players to use and earn their money.

The Experience
The game will start you out with nothing, except for 20 Credits. To allow you to buy some items such as food, vehicles, etc. The food of course you will need to keep your working level at peak condition. You will be able to get a job working at a business that other players own, or that the NPC's of the game will have. You will be able to move a character on the screen from your house to explore the region that other players will be able to develop as they expand up. So from working at jobs, whether it be a resource harvesting job, to a retail outlet, to a CEO of a corporation, or maybe back to destitute. The game will follow your character, so for example, to work at a job, you go to that location and do your job, earn money, then you are able to continue, whether it be exploring, shopping, or resting. There will be a chat system in place for you to communicate with other players. You will have a profile page which will show your current career, any businesses that you may own, and if you are within a corporation, then you will be able to access your portable office there. Using the Post Offices, you will be able to send messages to each other, send packages, etc. It will be about accumulation to then have the virtual citizens and even other players purchase the products, whether directly from exploring, or through the Market. There will be a whole world to go out and develop through building businesses, etc.

Well, that is the raw thought pattern that I have been working on to try and make a game interesting, but one that can get quite complicated and involved as they progress through, right down to building new areas and settlements. I'm still working out the details, but I believe the concept is there and something that I'm constantly fleshing out.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

Hey, i was working on something similiar.
Mine was just like you start with some money to open a starting business, then you need to pay taxes ofcourse, and the system is the "client" so the income would be random (kinda sucks).

But your looks like a GTA Business Version and it sounds cool.

PS: I gave up because to make mine, i needed alot of research about almost every business because each business pay a different value of taxes and has a whole new stock to sell. Be aware of that ;)

And if you want some motivation here's my old one: There's no game that is fully complete in this area.

Good Luck

As I've said in other threads, better to look for something simple that you enjoy, code that, then build on it, rather than looking to enjoy the complexity of something really, really complex and only getting that enjoyment once you finish the code. That's seriously delayed gratification - so much so I think it breaks a persons morale.

Good luck on the project, it seems an intriguing set up! :)

I completely hear you Callan. For myself, I need to see the final project in my head so that I know where to look for. A sort of motivation so to speak. Then, over the day as I work, or watch tv, all of a sudden it gets broken down and everything then filters into a sort of how we can achieve the complexity. I'm also looking at designing the database in such a way so that expansion could be possible within the game itself, so an administration mode so to speak. This way I can code the PHP, then upload it, then login to the game and then input the data into the appropriate area.

This has been milling in my head, and so just needed this as a place to dump the thoughts out. This way as we all explore this, it simply motivates me to do more. Like today, I should get some rest, but it is my only day off. So here I am pouring out my thoughts, ideas, constructs, and other random stuff that floats in there.

By the way, in the other thread jwalton922 helped with a great link. I'll poke my way through there. I'm almost considering just going the route of creating my own. I have a sort of pixel-art style that I'm going to go for. So I'll just make some simplistic graphics as place holders, and then later on once there is enough happening with the game I'll change them and make them better. This way I can get moving on the game here.

Thanks all for your help. I'm trying to soak up as much as I can and am diving into this with two feet. So all is good. ;)

It sounds very kewl. You can check out my Urban Realms tutorials, they are not exactly what you want but might have some ideas and show hows in them.

Okay, I added a download link at the top in the second post. There obviously isn't very much at all, just wanted to get it up and then as I work on the code, I'll update the link when there is a significant update.

Download Link: removed

Enjoy!
