Goo Engine

Post by hallsofvallhalla »

So I haven't talked about it on here yet but I have been granted access to the Goo Engine alpha. It is a 3d WebGl engine.

this demo says it all

they have a 4 week contest with some pretty big name judges but it ends Sunday. I am going to kick some butt this weekend and try to have a demo up by Sunday to show off. Wish me luck!

If anyone is wondering about the engine let me just say this. It is quite awesome but very early in. No editors whatsoever currently. Everything is code. If you are looking for a 3d engine with editors I recommend PlayCanvas.

They are creating editors for Goo but not there yet.

Wow, that is nice! There are really starting to be some impressive WebGL engines!

I am actually a little irritated by some things with the engine. Will not go into detail but taking a break from it and working on my 2d mmo using impactjs instead.

I fear people are right when they say WebGL just isn't where it needs to be at yet.

While I can't claim to know for sure, as I have not used WebGL at all and am only going on what I have heard, I have heard over and over again that it is really in the hands of browser vendors at this point to tap further into the GPU to make it really viable. One thing I have noticed about almost all of the demos I have seen is that they are very, very low on vertices. Sure, there are some nice water effects, good textures, etc., but very few models.

correct and the loading time can be worse than downloading the game as a client. I have also noticed nearly all of them are VERY low level so you will be writing tons of code to do the most simplest things.

I hate to say it, but I would honestly give it 5 more years or so before I would look at it as a platform that we can build even last-gen games on. It obviously doesn't hurt to keep an eye on it, but that is about it I think. Given enough time, I am sure we will have big engines on the scale of Unity that make it simple and probably even editor-based, but the instability, low performance and rapid evolution are keeping major engine vendors from investing heavily in it to make user-friendly tools.
