sorry to hear of the sad new halls. you're in my prayers.
For the free indie gold, if you feel to make it that way maybe placing a registration limit and a post limit before a person may get gold access. so like being a member for 2 - 3 months and 100 post or something like that.

If you go that way, don't just make it "x # of posts" because we'll be inundated by spam posts for people to get their post count
In the event you do go with the free option, at least set up a donation link

Love the idea of donations. This way people can pay what they can afford and nothing at all if they find the tutorials useless.

Went ahead and setup the donate button on my games guild account a little early. Expect the first game to be released within a week.
Thanks for all the help and info!

Halls how you do it is totally up to you. I know how much it costs to keep a host up and running as well as a forum like this. Plus you put a lot of work into these tutorials both free and the IR Gold stuff. I would personally go with Jpoisson's way this way those tutorials go to loyal members of the community if you go the free route. You could also give the access to those who have put a project up in the project showoff section. This will also warrant those getting access to the material have a working knowledge of how you program and an understanding of how php, ajax, and mysql all work with each other. This will help to reduce spam as well.
Personally I have no problem paying for IR Gold at it's current cost. You should just put the disclaimer on it

In the off chance anything I make starts generating income, expect a large donation to the community and I would hope everyone else would do the same.

Hi Halls
I don't mind either way (I know how annoying it is when people say this, because you want a dam answer

)
But being free would be much easier than paying for it. As I am only 17, I have no paypal account or Visa or whatever you accept, and I don't think me mum would pay for it, even if I paid her. But whatever way you choose will be fine, i'll try and find a way around expenses
