I like that, and I think it is an example of a good combination of game story and game mechanics :)

Just being able to switch classes at some cost/after some long cooldown wont do?

That would still be a class-based game, which would likely be a very different game. If it wasn't for the obvious similarity in skill-based and class-based games when it comes to being massively multiplayer, they would likely be considered different genres. Class-based and skill-based game design is extremely different, and it seems he wants to make a skill-based game. Both have their good elements and their drawbacks, and it is just up to personal taste.

Seem much the same to me - a skill system means there's only one class, with a more complicated 'spec' system to that one class.

Being able to switch classes seems to be the same as choosing traits, it's choice either way. Unless you can't go back on your trait choices/reset and respend the points, but then it's not really about classes and more about in what way to make the player stuck with his choices.

In my opinion a RPG game of any type should be about you crafting a charter and rather then picking 1 of 4 characters with set skills it would be better to pick one of 4 different jobs to give you basic skills but after that you pick up the "jack of all trades" mode so if you like magic but yet still want to weild a sword and fight in the front lines, its up to you. It keeps each person in the game different making more and more possibilities for each character. Unless you've been playing the game for months its really never too late to change you charater style if you get bored. Plus it makes the game more realistic in terms of how in real life you can't just say "i'm bored of being a farmer I'm going to be a architect for now on" You have to ease the transformation. Plus it also lowers the "everyone wants to be a jedi" syndrome as everyone is just a person.
