I always think it is funny when players are playing a F2P game and never buy anything, then they complain when development starts to slow down.
I would rather just pay a monthly subscription for some benefits.

Exactly! We are doing it that way, cause I hate it when someone who is brand new to the game, but is loaded in cash, and buys all kinds of crap to beat the holy hell outta people, while us little people who don't have loads of cash, have to work up to that point.

Something we have talked about before even starting the game. This was one of those BIG topics!
That is a very good way to get around the problem.

I don't personally like F2P games that have "paid areas" or things like that. If you are going to withhold large portions of content, you may as well make it P2P in my eyes. I can't quite explain it, but items being sold for real money seems more acceptable to me than content, as long as it is the regular item shop fare (i.e., +xp scrolls, bag increase) and not gear (like extra-strong end-game gear).

Ours are so far:
forming alliances, perm ship upgrades, ship change (to one of 3 premium style ships), planet colonization (with an x amount per month; x because its undecided), custom designs (weapons, ship, etc) and I think a few others...

people will pay insane amounts for an added edge. there is a deiscussion about donations to a game tht i used to play (still do every now n then but not as much)
one post. and this is no lie either.
iv donated over £10,000
got CTRL from lvl 60-150
and
Cooper level 100-200
also full lordkit for my tao and 2 devilbraces for my dog
ok its a different type of game. still a MMORPG but not a browser based. its a private server of legend of mir.
http://www.mirrevenge.com/forums/mir-re ... ating.html <<incase u wanna read it all lol.
but i guess its all down to you on why your making the game. if you want a small return for the work you have done and enjoy doing it. then small amounts are the way to go.

Wow, that is a lot of money. However, I have no idea what the rest of it means.

i can see your point about paying for content. Probably better to leave paid extras just items and such, though if I was to do paid zones they would be really small and those with access could sell the items they find there.

i know this thread is old. But i personally wouldnt pay for anything in anygame.. Paying for things is such a ripoff. Like paying for 1337 UB3R G34R is gay as hell, and paying for extra zones is retarded. do the microtransactions like the team from mythos was gonna do, have it where they can buy a sort of currency for like 1 dollar or 5 dollars, and have it where you can trade it for ingame gold so everyone can use them and have a chance to get epic gear from like special coin vendors or something. stuff like that that is balanced, fair, and can make for an interesting economy.

That is how we are setting up ours. You purchase what is called a Token, where 1 Token = $1USD. Those Tokens can purchase things where in game money cannot. And you can sell your Tokens for in game credits. There will also be quests where you can earn Tokens as to opposed buying them. Contests that win you only Tokens...etc...

I played Evony....a lot....I did buy coins one time in it so I could move my city near a friends. Other than that I personally haven't bought into the whole micro transaction deal, but I know many browser based games are able to pull it off quite well. That also goes for micro subscriptions. $5 is nothing if you really like the game.
Mafia Wars and other game from Zynga make a killing with special coins I guess. For those that haven't seen them here is a link

I noticed the 3d mmorpg Runes of Magic uses diamonds that players can buy. Its seem to do really well.
