If you use a major distro of Linux like open suse, Fedora, Ubuntu. Then lamp will most likely work. Now if your using one of them random distro's with like 1 update and whatnot. Then no maybe not. But then I ask why are you using a distro with no updates and no Linux standardization.

What if he was running a small linux dist on a router and wanted to code php on that?

I said CODE php, write the code, not run it on the router, he might be uploading it to another server and run it there or edit it remotly
