Whay spend all that time and money and skill on 3d animations and not hire a decent writer?

I wanna see this movie so bad! Didn't Tim Burton produce or direct this?

Tim Burton was only the producer for 9. He did not direct or write it, so his vision and style are reflected very little in it. I have come to realize when big names (who usually do other jobs) produce a movie, it is typically just a marketing ploy. The movie industry uses Quentin Tarantino this way all the time. This is because it lets them slap their name on the posters, even though "producing" a movie is a role most know little about. If you say someone wrote it, and no one else, they had to have written the whole movie. Same for directing. However, if someone produced it, there is no minimum amount of work. They may have only stopped in the studio once a month to make sure they were still filming. That was likely the extent of Burton's connection to 9.

I also thought it was a terrible movie. It was boring, aimless and rambling. The characters were paper thin, and the main character's motives are basically unexplained. Why does he want to risk his new life for someone he only had a fleeting conversation with?

My fiancee and I rented it, and we could not make it more than 45 minutes in before we stopped it.

I agree totally. No real plot. Story was thrown together, and they tried to capture the whole world in a 1/2 square mile area. Didn't work. It was like a struggle between smurfs and gargamel.
