A few questions about browser games

Hi all!

After finishing the video tutorials (which helped me a lot) i want to start working on my game from scratch, (i already planned how the game is going to be and stuff) but i have a few questions before i actually start working on it:

1. Should i start with the style (style.css) first or i can just do the game and add the style later on ?
2. I will be having stats like stamina (required for battle), energy (for jobs), etc ... so i will need a timer for them (i could use only one timer that refreshes all the stats). Do i need something else like ajax for not having to refresh the page? (i currently have Xampp)
3. Is it easier to make a stats table in mysql and add a statid for players, monsters, etc ... or add the stats directly into the players, monsters, etc.
The reason i'm asking this, is because i will have tons of stats : 14 already in the video tutorial + my own stats : energy, maxenergy, stamina, maxsta and who knows how many others.

Well that's it for now, i think this answers will help me to get working on my game.
If you have some other tips feel free to share them.

Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english ! (i'm from Romania) :)

probably easier to start with a style. but can be done either way.

kinda comfused about your next 2 questions tho...

there are several ways to update energy stats etc. best one by far would be the on view method. seen here http://buildingbrowsergames.com/2008/07 ... d-of-cron/

off topic... i knew a roby once from romania... did u by n e chance play mir revenge??

1. build the style.css as you build the game
2. if you want a real time update without a refresh you must use javascript's getDocumentById and ajax
3. if you have tons of stats then make separate table.

For whatever this is worth... I am building my CSS as I go along. Start out with a simple page and add elements/formatting as you need them. Otherwise you get bogged down in messing about with your style sheet and not actually getting any code written :)

I always make a photoshop design first, then a XHTML & CSS document. It is much easier to get a good looking site that works in all browsers from the start instead of adding that later. Also the visual style is the first a potential customer see and should therefore be awesome :P

Thank you all for the help.

I have already begin working on the game and started using Smarty to(i like the ideea of keeping your code separated from design). Well that's it for now, thanks again for all the help and tips and will keep you updated on the forums as i advance thru the game.
