Ajax is also a technology that is at its end while at its beginning. When it comes down to it, its really just coming up with creative ways to use the XmlHttpRequest.
Flash can be a very powerful tool in the right hands, (sadly most people don't have them lol.) a speed boost (even if only for nivida cards) is very good.

I think eventually Silverlight and Flash will be pushing neck and neck. But for right now, Adobe has an incredible saturation of computers loaded with the Flash plugin. While downloading a plugin does not sound like a big deal to your average tech-savy individual, it can be quite a pain to a dial-up-equipped layperson.
Also, can Flash be developed without paying anything for the software? I know it is possible to develop Silverlight software without buying an IDE, and, while it is hard, that will probably lead to a good amount of decent open-source SL editors if it gets more media attention and acceptance.

Silverlight is installed an just about every single windows machine now. New windows updater likes to install it

. So the whole is it on my machine or not isn't so much of an issue really

.
Flash cannot be developed without paying for Adobe Flash. But silverlight just needs visual studio express 2008 C#/Vb one or the other and your good to go. Oh you also need the web development part and its toolkit

. You do need alot of stuff but hehe if your a developer your probably used to that. I just have Visual Studio 2005/2008 pro so I didn't have to download much to use it.

Really? I didn't think Windows updater got Silverlight automatically. On my Windows XP machine, I accepted all Windows updates, but did not have the Silverlight plugin until I went to Microsoft's webpage and looked at some of their example sites. I had to manually choose to install it. It has been about 4 months since I last used my XP machine, and I got the plugin on it about 6 months ago, so if it was in the last 6 months that they pushed it through the updater, that makes sense. If it was longer than 6 months ago, I am not sure why I didn't get it.
