I stumbled across this on how to build your own 3D Scanner and I thought I would share it with everyone!
http://www.david-laserscanner.com/
All you need is:
- A camera (e.g. web cam)
- A hand-held line laser (The laser that produces a line, NOT a point)
- Two plain boards in the background
- A Windows PC
- Our free software DAVID-laserscanner
I downloaded the software and will be trying this soon!

Holy crap, if you had both a 3D scanner and a 3D printer, you could basically clone things in minutes! Man...this really is the future lol

Lmao!!!
By the way, supposedly you can do this using a "Shadow Line" too. Direct a very bright light to the object, and use a shoe-string or something similar to drag a thin shadow line down the object like the laser.
I used the software with the demo video they provide to check it out, it's pretty awesome. The gallery looks amazing, like you can make some really amazing scans with this.
Nice find.
