As Jack pointed out, in order to let everyone join in the chat we should think about the timezones of other continents.
So just a quick question to aid in the implementation of our grand "off-topic Fridays"chat:
What time GMT are you most active? (And which continent do you live?)
For your convenience here is a time converter:

To start us off, I live in Australia! Here I wake at 4am and hit the hay at 8pm. So thats 18:00 GMT -> 10:00 GMT. Accounting for work - the middle 8 hours, both ends of that range will be fine.

Friday for me in GMT:
Wake up: 17:00
Work til about 23:00 or 00:00
Free time til about 07:00
So my window is about from 23:00 -> 07:00

That leaves an overlap of 567

. I think SpiritWebb's idea of having two might have to happen.
There's only one way to find out: Post your own availability!

That's not a bad overlap though. That leaves 3 hours that at least me and you might be on. (keyword being 'might', I still gotta play minecraft

)
Others might overlap a little more, and some people might be less busy on Fridays.
Besides we don't want it to be on for too long, because less people will go out of there way to come chat if it's on all day.

I agree with you that it shouldn't be on too long: exclusivity is key! But not everyone can make it in the time window the chat is open.
Idea! We could rotate it every friday night. So this friday we might have it a GMT PM session, and next friday have it a GMT AM session. Exclusivity is preserved! - Wait... will that be good or bad?

I'm not sure. I guess it really is up to the rest of the community.
I vote for a trial run!

Great! That gives us 24 hours to guess from.
Could you please be more specific? Not everyone there has the same sleeping patterns. Some people I know pull all-nighters every night, so their availability is effectively from a timezone on opposite of the world. (Then again, it just might be the people I know!

I'm at GMT+1.
I wake up at 04.30 GMT on a Friday.
Go straight to work, till around 06.00 GMT
Then get ready for the next job which starts at 08.00 GMT
That finishes around 16.30 - 17.00 GMT
Available from say 18.00 - 21.00 GMT
Then I go out, and after go straight to work gain at 04.30 GMT (this is now saturday)
Get home at 06.00 GMT

Keep the timezones coming, it is pretty interesting to know when people are online. As of now, I'm the only one who wakes up before work/school.
