Zombie v. Humans

Hello, hello.

I know i haven't been active in the last year, but when my first .com domain expired ( 2-3 days ago ), I remembered how it all started. It started here, watching the browser mmo tutorial, learning the trade using trial and error ( but mostly error ) and halls and the rest of the gang helping us newbies out.

Anyway, since this is somewhat of an anniversary for me i decided to make a little game. To showcase how much i've impoved ( or failed to ).

Nothing complex, 3 days work. A rock, paper, scissor game. But with zombies and humans.

So without further ado, I present to you:

Zombie v. Humans http://zvh.net76.net (still in very early pre-alpha or something )
Also i forgot to mention, this is entirely text-based.

The winning conditions is simple: Exterminate the enemy (population reduced to 0).

Each side has 4 abilities and 4 and 3 stats for the humans and zombies respectively.

Humans:

Stats
  • food: people need food to live; no food people start to die
  • happiness: happy people attract more survivors and fight better
  • weapons: you need these to kill zombies
  • population: if they reach 0 you loose
Abilities
  • scavange: get weapons and food, some people will die during the scavange, to the zombies
  • attack: go out and attack the zombies; weapons will be used and people will be happy. Zombie will die and loose their focus
  • party!: people are happier when they party. Uses food.
  • mine: place mines around the camp. Uses weapons. Protects entirely from the next zombie attack.
End day
  • survivors will come to your camp if you have food and are happy
  • survivors will die if you dont have any food
  • survivors will each eat 1 food
Zombies

Stats
  • population: this reaches 0, zombies lose.
  • focus: focused zombies are dangerous zombies. This will boost the effect of your abilities.
  • freshness: a rotting zombie is almost useless. If this reaches 0 your zombies begin to die. For good this time.
Abilities
  • Attack: has 4 outcomes and you loose all focus.
  • [list]
  • if the humans have mines: you loose, lots of zombies die, people are happier.
  • if the hums outpower you ( clear victory ): zombies die, people are happier, they use some weapons, no hums die
  • if the hums barely win: zombies dies, humans die, humans use weapons
  • if zombies win (zombies win ): Zombies get freshness to full (they eat), humans die, humans use weapons, humans aren't happy anymore.
[*]Roam: uses all your focus but boosts your population a lot[/*]
[*]Moan: restores focus, boosts population a little[/*]
[*]Rot: you rot in the sun giving off a horrible scent. Makes the humans very unhappy. Very.[/*]

End day.
  • You loose some freshness and some focus
  • If freshness is 0, you begin to loose population

Green means stats have gone up or stayed the same.
Red: stats have gone down.

For now only humans can be played ( there is no bot for humans, if you play zombie ).

Hi Parazitull and welcome back! :D

A simple gameplay idea, sounds fun and is definitely doable.

I'll be sure to play for a while when you've finished it. :)

Got around to updating the "game".

Added a more intuitive data representation system ( pictures and arrows in simple terms ).
Also added a way to visualize past turns by storing them on the page. All turn info is lost if you refresh the page.

P.S. I don't consider this game to be fun. Just a time sink.

In firefox, when I click on scavenge I get a little scrolling side bar on the right and bottom, as it must expand by a few pixels and it thinks I might want to scroll down to see those pixels. It's kind of jarring - might want to make that box a little bigger?

Otherwise, I don't really know what was going on, but the messages about stuff at the bottom, especially that there were a few, was nice feedback for simply having stabbed at buttons because 'they sound good'. The little icons for stuff instead of numbers is amusing and mildly enjoyable too. I'll have to remember that trick myself :)

I probably wouldn't play again because A: I don't know what I was doing and B: I won, apparently - so I wont let those zombies get a second chance! You might have been looking for a huger responce for the time you spent coding, but it is a bit fun to play.

Do you have google analytics or such on the front page? I can stumble it and then you can see if you get a jump in traffic on it.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

I found out why the scrollbars appeared ( ff adds an outline to the link, so i set outline to none and also made the overflow hidden ). So that is solved.

Regarding button stabbing, I will try to put together a tutorial.

Regarding the total lack of challenge or purpose concerning the gameplay, I am aware of that, and will try to fix it in the near future. But for that I will need some data from "zombie experts". So i was thinking of adding some kind of form at the start of the "game" in which to ask questions like "How many zombies could one man kill?" and stuff like that which then i will use to balance the game.

Anyway, will update the game as soon as I finish and then update this post.

Otherwise, I found it engaging. I actually read your post here from before, so I knew what I was doing.

There is a bit of re-playability, but not quite enough. Maybe a high-scores page?

I'd maybe suggest a series of difficulty settings, so players can try to beat each one or such.

Wow i played it when you first posted it, and i played it again today. Its much more visually appealing now :) Curious to see what this becomes.
