My son looks at it and says why where they made a drive that big when the disk are smaller

hah cuz back in the 80's the bigger the kewler it was. Cellphones, glasses, jeans, shirts, cars, ect...

Hmmm... I posted earlier, but it disappeared
I remember when 5.25" disks came out. They were so much better than the 8" disks we used to use.
