Anyone know where to get some free desert tiles or just ground tiles in general? I googled things for about an hour and a half with no results :(

Have you checked the classic: Reiner's Tileset? He has some decent sand tiles, as well as some rocky ground tiles that you could re-color, and some props for a desert scene, too, such as cacti, tumble weeds and others.

Thanks and I have a quick question. I downloaded a huge multitiled image how do I seperate them to what I want? I tried messing with it in paint but it only ended in failure.

i use adobe photoshop and set the grid to 32x32

I am assuming Gimp can also do this and is free.

Yep, Photoshop/Gimp is your friend when dealing with tile sheets! If they are all the same size and you are familiar with another programming language you may be able to make a batch processing application to do it.
