I don't think so. While I think they need a unique spin on them, and not just be lifted from LotR, I think they are a staple of fantasy settings.

Alot of people will say they are, but I find them nice and classical. \
Like said if you have dwarves humans and orcs, i'll break your neck.
Though looking at all the big fantasy mmos, don't they all have elves too?

cant stand them in anything other than D&D though D&D did them wrong and made them short when they should be tall and slender.

They are a fantasy staple. I agree with halls on the D&D variant being my favorite, though I'm not particularly fond of the drow; mostly because half the drow PCs I've ever seen were drzztt clones.
If you are building a fantasy genre game and not going out on a limb to create a totally unique IP, they fit.

cant stand that, and to me it seemed them and the duergars(evil dwarves) were just copies of each other.

Mmmm elves are epic they are a must be for an RPG. I mean what kind of fantasy RPG DOESN'T have elves? Players would be all what the hell there are no elves.
