Getting a solar kit together

I wondered if anyone else knows about this stuff (I happen to be in Australia, so referencing local store is bonus points).
I basically want to charge a 12v battery with a solar panel, via a charger that shows me how charged the battery is. Then I want to use a DC to AC converter. I would like to try running an LCD TV off that AC output, as one example. I want it all relatively cheap.
Currently I'm not too fussed about how long it takes to charge the battery. I've been told deep cycle is the way to go for batteries, but there are lead acid ones that are fairly cheap but not deep cycle. Perhaps they will suffer from memory issues, but if that may not be an issue if it takes a long while and they are cheap anyway. Then again, I guess I have to dispose of such a battery.
Thoughts?
