managing interactions between multiple fsm's

Hi I'm new to the forum here.
I'm working with another developer to build a game similar kinda like Farmville for Kenya. I have several finite state machines already developed for objects inside the game like villagers, huts, plots of farmland, etc. Right now we are wondering if there best practices for managing interactions between multiple finite state machines. Do you guys have articles or books you really recommend about this topic?
