So, I think my laptop is facing motherboard problems. I have a desktop, a Samsung galaxy tablet that im getting fixed soon and a school-loaned ipad. But I still need the laptop to do what the tablets cant and all that jazz. I have a pretty low budget (my birthday is Feb 8 and thats all the money I will have before summer) but im curious. Will a windows 8.1 tablet (like the dell venue pro) with a keyboard case be just as good as getting a cheap laptop? (most laptops now will likely be windows 8 anyway). Or should I just get another actual laptop?

Windows 8.1 tablets are more pricey than a cheap laptop, a lot more.

Actually, the Dell Venue 8 Pro is almost kind of bizarrely cheap for a full Windows 8 tablet. Granted, it is only 8 inches and as you can figure, it is Atom, not iX.
It depends on what kind of work you need to get done with it. Its size will limit it to more "tablety" stuff. I can't imagine trying to control the desktop through touch on a screen that small (it can be a challenge on a 13-inch screen). I guess you could connect a mouse to it, but that would seem odd lol.

I just received a sony vaio 15'' fit, and I simply love it. It can be converted as tablet, it is touch, and yet a full featured laptop with keyboard, touchpad and 16Gb ram. On Win 8 it runs fine... Win 8.1 is another story... for me it doesn't work all that well there.

Is this your second PC that doesn't like 8.1 or the same one? I have not had any problems with 8.1 on either of my Windows 8 computers.

My main PC => I changed basically all, and now it works with 8.1
On this laptop which comes pre-installed with 8, some features like bluetooth doesn't seems to work anymore with 8.1 (and guess what, it's an intel chip and driver for it). So maybe I shall wait a bit before upgrading. Also windows 8.1 have the bad habit to resize all fonts, icons and all... unless you set them as compatibility mode. Something I hardly like.
