Just curious if anyone here has tried to develop their own Instant messenger from scratch as to opposed using programs like NeoMessenger to make it.

Like to personalize one...say for example, Indie-Resource having an IM just for indie and its members. No one else can get access to it without being a member!! :)

Was curious cause I'm wanting to do that for my crew who is helping build our game!

Never seen the need either, just use group chat on msn or something? or your own IRC channel?

I know how you feel. I wasn't content with just modifying a website template or PHPBB for my forums, I had to go and make them from scratch.

Honestly, there are still plenty of fields that could use custom IM clients. The general IM client has pretty much been perfected, but I saw a great IM client that was designed for industries that require communication within a cubicle-based office. It allowed you to make a map of the work floor that included images of everyone so you could know who was who, and it also let you add what project you were working on to your away status, give your work load in a percentage, and about a hundred other features specifically for that industry.

Google Wave looks quite intresting also, like a IM combined with email. Quite cool, but mainly focused at companies.
