Odd game challenge: Lowest resolution game ever

Post by Jackolantern »

This is something I was thinking about the other day. I was wondering if anyone has ever made the world's lowest resolution game. How low of resolution? Well, really as low as it can go and still be considered to have graphics: 1x1. One pixel. You could blow it up to be big enough to see. But how would the game work? You could change the color of the pixel, and of course the resolution says nothing about the sound, so the game would likely have to rely on a combination of the display and detailed surround sound (or at least good stereo so people can get an idea of direction when wearing good headphones).

Of course it would be a novelty, but it could possibly fit into the narrative. For example, the protagonist could be mostly blind and only able to perceive average colors of what they are looking at, and have to solve their situation using mostly their hearing.

At least the art requirements would be low!

Low art requirements? Sounds like my kind of game!

Wow that seems a lot like "Blind Simulator" if you think it through. Definitely a challenge.

Are you allowed to rotate the pixel when blown up, or is that cheating?

I don't really see why it would hurt, but I guess that would technically violate the idea that you have a 1x1 pixel display, since no other displays can actually rotate their physical pixels that I am aware of ;)

You could make a Simon says game where the pixel color is changed and corresponds with a key press (purple is p, for example)

True, but I was thinking it would be funnier if it was a much more ridiculous genre, like FPS, RPG or adventure game lol.

Haha, just thought about this one true and had an idea..

One pixel color, full audio blind-simulator.

The colors of the pixel simulate the players 'inner sense' of danger, like spiderman!

So a quick walkthrough of the gameplay..
You can move around by using WASD and perhaps some action on SPACE.

You see: *Blue huge 1 pixel*
You hear: *bird sounds, ocean waves splashing*
You hear a narrator ask you 'Well hello, how are you today?'
You hear a narrator ask you 'Oh a silent one? Perhaps if you just nod your head for implicating a yes then..'
You press 'SPACE'
You hear a narrator say 'Good.. All is good.. Oh, look at that. Isn't it beautiful?'
'after short silence'
You hear narrator say 'Oh, I deeply apologize, I forgot that you cannot see.. well.. let's try again.. Oh, can you hear that? Isn't it beatiful?'
You see: *Light blue 1 pixel*
You press 'SPACE'
Your hear narrator 'Yeah, it's beautiful..'
You hear: *footsteps closing in from behind you*
You see: *Orange pixel*
You hear: *footsteps closing in closer you from behind you*
You see: *Red pixel*
You press 'W' to walk forward.
You hear: *your own footsteps walking forward and the sound of the ocean to your left and birds above you*
You see: *Orange pixel*
You hear narrator say 'Now there, why did you run away from that beautiful lady?'

haha.. Ok, enough if the story telling, you catch my idea on 1x1 pixel gaming.
Why so serious?

So basically it will be called "Blindness Simulator" or something? :/ That may be offensive i guess.

But it's a nice concept, only that it needs lots of dexterity to control a game only with your hearing.
