This game will be a browser based MMO, for a start at least. The main story is that there isnt one, mostly because I cant think of one but also because its not a single-player game. As the title suggests the game will be using Oddworld characters, for those that dont know what Oddworld is, it was a game series that was released on the PS1 and on PC as Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus, then they released another two, Munch's Oddysee and Strangers Wrath, and these 2 were on Xbox. Im not going to spend ages writing out the story for the games but if you do want to know more about them go to google and search for them.

I happened to be roaming Steam looking for a new cheap game to play, and I jumped at the opportunity to grab the first 2 Oddworld games, Ive just played through a few levels and thought "this would make a great world to base an MMO on!". Dont know why but I did, and now I know I can get loads of images, music, videos etc that would work in with this, Ive decided to do just that, make an MMO out of it.

Im going to use some of the basics from the MMO tut by halls but will be changing alot, for one the first page will be have an intro video embedded into it showing the basic story behind Abe, who will of course be a character in this. You will get to choose which race you play as, Il have to go check wikipedia or something to find all the proper race names but they include Mudukons, Sligs, Vykkers, Glukkons, and Steefs. Go to the wiki for images.

The interface will be different for every race, you can go to the arena where you will battle enemies also depending on your choice of race. Heres a list of other things that will be in the game.
  • Avatar choice*
  • Mounts*
  • Mini-games*
  • Pets*
  • Much more...
*Race Dependant

Right, anything you want me to add just let me know though this forum topic, currently I havent even got the intro page done so no link to the site yet, although it will be in the same area as my Steam Punk game (which is still going to be worked on). I will get working on a "COMING SOON" page just for funsies. And if you have any source files you can provide then please send them to my email at neronix17@gmail.com I already have the official site files so no need for them, thanks.

Technically you can't even distribute it. If the owners of the Oddworld IP feel like it they can shut you down at any time for copyright infringement...

yeah but that's only if it was to get huge and cause them loss of money. Its extremely rare that would ever happen on a old game concept like that.

You might be surprised what some old companies would try and protect, but halls is right they probably won't do anything i just wanted to let you know it could happen before you spend months on it.

Technically yes they could, but since they havent released anything new and even their website has the copyright at 2006 then no they wouldnt do a thing, plus they have no way of taking legal action since the closest they can narrow my location to is the country. Plus im going to say on the site that the copyright belongs to them etc to avoid any legal stuff anyway.

my final comment on the material is I would go with original stuff anyways. What if it gets super popular?

I agree. Especially since you are making an MMO. Isn't the plan for it to get massive?

Ok, Il email them and ask them first, that way they cant shut me down if it gets popular. Also if I dont even get a reply I can use that against them.
