Anyone got any suggestions for an open source map editor?
I am looking for something as a base to start playing around with. I would prefer if it doesn't use "tile sheets", but individual images as tiles. but that doesn't matter as that can probably be changed pretty easy.

Every map editor on that list is useless. None of them are use HTML5 canvas or JS. I am looking for an editor that works in the web browser.

Not sure what you are looking for. There are HTML5 engines that use Tiled, so obviously it isn't useless for the web. What are you wanting to do?

Its useless for me. I want a map editor that's in a browser just to play with. I don't want a million features with it, just the basics. If I do anything with it, it will eventually go up on some site for the members to play with.Jackolantern wrote:Not sure what you are looking for. Ohhh, you want a browser-based map editor? You didn't say you wanted one actually browser based. We assumed you meant one to create maps for web games, of which those would be useful for.
Web-based ones are harder to come by, but they do exist. Here is one I found. Maybe also try downloading Effect Engine. It was a quite impressive cloud game development and hosting platform that went under and generously made their whole platform open source. It had a full suite of editors that were all web-based. I am not sure how much of an effort it would be to extract the map editor, but I assume it probably would not be trivial.
If you are wanting just the tile map editor, you would probably be better off with the first one linked since it appears to just be the tile map editor.
