Are there any linux alternatives to these tools you can suggest?

You can use the same, altho you will have to download and install apache, php, and mysql manually. For editing code files there are a bunch of linux programs, just google :)

i have tried to watch the vid 5 times now, it always stops mid-loading :( :( :( i will try downloading it.

He won't have to install everything manually. Apachefriends also offers Lampp, but linux finds a way to make it a pain in the ass. I still don't have Indiepoint functioning correctly for building on my laptop.

As for code editing on linux. Its preinstalled code editors, are already a match for some of the best notepad alternatives that Windows uses. I think I use emacs.

Depends on what dist....Linux can mean just that...linux and not so much more :P
