Quests of Crocania

Have a project in the works but not much media? How about an idea you are turning into a project? Maybe a game design document you want to start with. This is the place.

Quests of Crocania

Post by hallsofvallhalla »

Well I am certainly missing having a game with players to work on. I miss the alpha and beta stages of my last games i think its time I starting crapping or got off the crapper.

i am have had a want for a long time now to make a fantasy based browser game with user built dungeons and instanced dungeons. I have been reluctant to build one due to the mass population of fantasy games out there but after a long search I can't seem to find very many any more. Not good ones anyways. I have been a table top gamer for over 20 years now and miss the good old days of dungeons and dragons. i am going to attempt to bring that back somewhat and tie my roots of pen and Paper fantasy games into this game. The title may change but for now it fits the story.

Crocania is a Continent full of mythical beasts, magic, psionics, and much more! Players develop their characters by questing through the several cities and towns in it. The game will be heavily combat based but also have a side of economics as the characters progress. Players later in the game will be able to buy shops and sell wares. There will be guilds, arenas, PVP, Guild wars, ect..
The biggest feature of QoC is the instanced and player built dungeons. In each town will be quest givers. They can be used to find ruins, dungeons, castles, ect for exploring. Unlike many other browser based games the quests will not be automatic. Players will actually explore these areas and fight creatures and search for loot. the travel system will be link driven but with a mini map to keep them from getting lost and to insure they explore every possible area. Also unique to the system is that every dungeon is instanced, basically built before the player enters it. This allows players to quest the same dungeons several times. I am not sure if the design of the dungeon will change or if just the creatures and items within it will. I fear creating a new design each time will cause confusion.

Anyways, thanks for reading and questions and comments appreciated. I will be posting more as I develop more.

why is that?

edit: ah seen your post.

Crocania was a city in the first Forsaken Sanctum game almost 3 years ago so I promise I didn't copy. You can go to the forsaken sanctum web site and see it in the storyline. Been there for years. The world I am using was created about 18 years ago when I wrote my own pen and paper RPG.

Well I have been working on the locations/quest mapping. Each dungeon/ruin/ect.. will have 100 possible squares for searching or walls or whatever. Well being that each area is instanced and players can make their own dungeons it is for sure going to bog down the database. about 400 entries for every player on a normal day. Times that by just 400 players and you got 160,000 entries!

I have come up with a way to reduce this significantly. It will drop this number to about 4 entries per person. Times that by 400 players and you only have 1600 entries! Big difference.

Basically I have found a way to map each square type to a letter of the alphabet and then string 10 letters to one row. I then have code that breaks down the stringed variable and turns it into squares. 100+ fields then becomes less than 10 fields.

It makes my dynamic quest system that much more powerful and versatile. I will post screens very soon. :)

1600 will be on the high side also. I am finding ways to reduce it even more.

1600 entries equals 2000+ dungeons at 100 searchable areas so 200,000 searchable squares equal only 1600 entries stored in the database!
