Google Stop censoring searches in China...?!

Google has decided to stop censoring search results in China, after discovering that someone based in that country had attempted to hack into the e-mail accounts of human rights activists. The company disclosed the move in a startling announcement posted to its blog late Tuesday.

Google said it was prepared to pull its business out of China, if issues around the surveillance and its decision to stop censoring results could not be resolved with the Chinese government.

Although the company did not accuse the Chinese government of being behind the hack attacks, Google said that the attacks, combined with attempts by China over the last year to “further limit free speech on the web” led it to conclude that it needed to “review the feasibility of our business operations in China.”

The company decided it will no longer censor search results on Google.cn, which it had been doing as a concession to the Chinese government since 2006 in order to be able to operate in China. The company didn’t say when it would stop censoring material but stated that it would be discussing with Chinese authorities how it might continue to operate legally in China, if at all, with an unfiltered search engine.

Interesting news, but, in the end, what card does Google have to fight China with? If Google does not follow China's censorship rules, China will just pull the plug and cut them off from their country. That would effectively cut Google off from 1.3 billion people. China determines what content comes into their network, the same way that they cannot access most American or European sites currently. However, this could also just be a calculated move to look like heroes of free speech in the western world if they figured they were done in China anyway.

Ye but is Chine worth the trouble, read an article about it and surprisingly Googles search engine in china is only 1% of all their total incomes. (Only have a swedish source: http://www.idg.se/17.108/2.1085/1.28511 ... egentligen).

The article also says that their biggest income from china is their exportcompanies that buys ad targeted at US and EU citizens, and that obviously don't require a local search engine in china.

Well, I didn't know how much revenue they got from China, but it stood to reason it would be a shame to lose 1.3 billion people. I guess it isn't that big of a deal. It is probably the other option then, where Google is just making this move to look like heroes of free speech outside of China. They know that China is not going to remove the censorship.

Ye and also Google was hacked, probably from chine where they got access to subject of the users mail and such. And Google needs to make people think their data is secure in order to gain customers for Google Apps.
