Re: Who here has ever seen an alien?
What I would wonder, though, is that if a race from another galaxy (or outside of our solar system in the Milky Way) could master faster-than-light speed, it seems like they would have the technology to be invisible. Humans are getting closer to invisibility, and we are nowhere near faster-than-light travel.
I do believe that there is other life out there. After seeing the Hubble Deep Field, it seems very hard for me to believe that there is not. But other galaxies are immensely huge distances away. Most are in the millions of light years. So for an alien race to make it here, they would have to go millions of times the speed of light to make it a leisurely trip. There are some closer extrasolar planets in our own galaxy, such as Fomalhaut b, which is about 25 light years away. But again, you have to travel light speed to reach it in a reasonable amount of time (our current technology would take 50,000 years to get there). So if they can travel light speed, why couldn't they be invisible?

This is going to go off topic, but. Why do they think you can travel in time when you go faster than the speed of light? I never understood that, I understand the point of view you are looking at it though. And how the hell does space have anything to do with time? Space is measured in mm.. cm.. meters.. km.. and time in seconds, minutes. Where is the link between them?Jackolantern wrote:So if they can travel light speed, why couldn't they be invisible?

I do not believe in Light years. Our scientists are constantly correcting themselves and its very very feasible that our perception of space distance is off. Its kinda like me setting you in the ocean and giving you some binoculars and asking you to judge the distance of islands miles in the distance without actually being able to travel there, and with the constant moving oceans. The human mind cannot fathom the distance of a million light years and I do not believe we have anyway of seeing truly that far.
Back to the point, We have no idea what another race might be possible of doing. Simply 1 invention can change the world and all we know completely. If you can say there is absolutely no possible chance that there is another race somewhere out there then I want you to take every game you own and throw it out the window. Stop reading books, listening to music, or even watching TV. Everything around you is a closed minded lie and by doing anything beyond adding 2+2 you could possibly explode your brain. I am not saying another race exists, only that there is a possibility. Even the bible speaks of it.

Einstein's greatest joke on the world.
Since light bouncing off the planet is a reflection he believed that if you could travel faster than the speed of light you could catch all the past reflections of the suns light bouncing off the earth and actually see the past. Where his theory got really screwy is when he said if you could travel back fast than the speed of light you could be in the past.
THats it in a quick explanation. Always made me laugh.

I don't see why travel faster than the speed of light would cause time travel. It is just traveling from point A to point B. It just depends on how fast you get there.Chris wrote:This is going to go off topic, but. Why do they think you can travel in time when you go faster than the speed of light? And "Light years" is misleading. It is not a measurement of time, bur rather, how far light will move in one year. It is an estimate, because light travels through various things, even in the supposed vacuum of space. It is between 6 - 10 trillion miles. The known universe is 13 billion light years across. That is all we know because the universe is only 13 billion years old (still in its infancy), so there are more than likely things much further than that, but space has not existed long enough for that light to reach us. In theory, every year another light year worth of images has reached us from the further depths of space.
There is actually a very scientific way of knowing how far away things are. It is called "red shift". Light has a property of shifting up the spectrum and becoming more red as it moves further and further through space. There are ways to seeing red shift on a micro scale even here on earth with precise enough equipment, so astronomers know how much red shift occurs over what distance. If you look at the Hubble Deep Field I linked above, you will see some of these extremely distant galaxies are almost completely white, while some are red. The red ones are the furthest, and are the closest to the 13 billion light year barrier.hallsofvallhalla wrote:I do not believe in Light years. There are many other ways they have to determine how far away galaxies are. While it is imprecise (10.1 billion LY and 10.2 billion LY is a huge difference), we know that they are not 10,000 or even 100,000 light years away. They are millions and billions of light years away.
You did read that I believe in life in other solar systems, right?hallsofvallhalla wrote:If you can say there is absolutely no possible chance that there is another race somewhere out there then I want you to take every game you own and throw it out the window.

Re: Who here has ever seen an alien?
i wasn't directing that at you
I know they have these scientific measures they use to tell distances but its never been proven, who has traveled 50 million miles through space? What I am saying is even the smallest fraction of being off could result in billions of miles of inaccuracy. We have no way of proving what i said. Scientist often have to redo thier calculations because of new technology proving the old stuff wrong. Its all a tale to me to get more funding

And a lot of it is. Half of science is trying to get funding to prove the guy before you had it wrong. If you just say everything is right, then you get no more funding, and you are out of a job lol. But unless what we know about physics is seriously wrong, or we are only viewing a micro scale of it (for example, the theory that the physics and space we see around us are properties of a metamaterial that we are in), some things astronomers pretty much know they have right.

Re: Who here has ever seen an alien?
i have seen an alien (or atleast i beleive it was, it certainly wasnt human, altho humanoid shaped and certainly was no animal)
was out in a forest with some mates wen i was 15 yrs old, doin as teens do.. findin somewhere to smoke that parents wouldnt find lol.
n e whos. we ended up just walking about chattin n shit, when we saw wht we thought was someone about 40-50 mtrs ahead of us with their back turned to us sorta looking around in a daze, we continued to walk towards it then one of my mates called out asking if they was ok. then it sorta turned towards us to show us its face. needless to say we all bloody legged it as fast as we could lol. all i remember is it had this pale bluey looking face and pure white eyes.
was shit scary lol
on the subject of the travel.
why does an alien have to travel @ x amount of light years just to come see us... they could live for thousands of years for all any one knows. one day to them could be several years for us. and it doesnt have to be a 'leasure trip' lol. you think how long some people spent traveling around the golbe in search of new places. before plane n things where invented.
christopher columbus didnt think about exploring but decided nto to just because it would have taken more than a day or 2 lol. Think of all the poele who go travelng to see new places. they can spend years doing so.
people who have flown to the moon, didnt go there n get back after a couple of hours lol.
and time travel is possable... travel to a different country and you travel in time (relitivly speaking) because of the time differences :p

I don't know if I've mentioned it... but I'm from the future
And I've seen an alien. I live next door to a family of them. They are from Mexico... oh wait, you meant a different type of alien

Re: Who here has ever seen an alien?
you make a good point torn, There are so many possibilities that we dont even think about
OMG Chris Columbus DID NOT discover America! He was not a traveler. He simply was screwing the queen and got caught and had to come up with a excuse of why he was seeing the queen so much. The king banished him in a nice way. Magellion found the Americas and the Vikings before him.
