Hey there!

Post by windextor »

Hello,

I'm not a programmer nor do I know much more about computers than the next guy (well that depends on how dumb the next guy is but you get my meaning), but I've always been a gaming enthusiast and played most of Blizzard's titles as well as other classics, such as Homeworld, Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Master of Orion II, etc.

As you can see I'm more of a strategy gamer / RPGer. I've always wanted to know how to build a simple text browser-based MMORPG. Text based for me doesn't mean ugly, it just means text based... or at least with very symbolic graphics; there are excellent games out there that fall in this category, like Kingdom of Loathing. I prefer graphics that are there to serve the game, and not the other way around.

Unfortunately nowadays games seem to be all about fancy explosions, and that's just sad. I miss the content-rich games of the 90's...

Anyway I've always considered making my own MMORPG somewhat of an impossible dream until I stumbled on Halls' video tutorials. That's what led me here.

Hopefully I'll be able to learn and contribute back to the community ;)

Very nicely said! My thoughts exactly :)

I also definitely suggest making browser-based MMOs if you have interest in creating an MMORPG. You are right in that it is nearly an impossible dream to create a 3D or even a 2D real-time MMO as a hobbyist. But making one with PHP, ASP.NET, etc. is much easier, and can very realistically be done by one person. Also, they are just very fun languages to code in because they give you very fast results.
