Back to the basics

Post by hallsofvallhalla »

So I decided to go back to where my love of games first stemed from for some inspiration. NES and SNES!!!

Whipped out the old Super Nintendo Emulator and started playing Final Fantasy 6, Awesome game! Really brings back memories and gets the development juices flowing.

Had to play some buster brothers too!! and the #1 NES game, super dodge ball.

I had the same thought a little while ago, and went back to play a ton of NES and SNES. But honestly, they haven't held up as well as I had thought, aside from a handful of legendary games. For example, I had a ton of fun playing Pitfall on the SNES, but that game is garbage now :P On the NES, if it isn't a Mega Man game, a Mario game (outside of US Mario 2), the first Zelda, or a small handful of others, I just can't play it. A bit more is viable on the SNES, but time just hasn't been nice to the game's library.

FFVI (FFIII) is still a great one, though, as is Chrono Trigger. But I even have a hard time going back to play FFVI due to the random, turn-based encounters.

hehe can understand that. I actually love random encounter and the turn based style attack.

as do I but I love being able to save when I want, rewind, and put in game genie codes very quickly! ;) And being able to play anywhere I want on my laptop or netbook

The atmosphere of the earlier games are just so much better than many games I see today.

I am also going to start playing WOW. Never really played it so figured it would be good to try it out. I will be playing on a private server though, really private but setup very very well.

I would prefer playing on the original systems, but all of the games worth playing are crazy expensive these days:

FFIII
Chrono Trigger
Earthbound
Dragon Warrior IV
Lufia

...and on and on lol. If you already have all of these games, it would be nice to play on the original system, but I just can't spend $1000 on 16 year old games.

I dunno if it'll help, but here's something I identified as possibly a key element of gameplay - you have a fixed obstacle, you don't know when it's coming, and there are many side area's you don't have to explore (important) but can choose to, and they often give stat bonuses that will help with the big obstacle when it finally comes.

That's the formula I identified, anyway. May be of use.
