Hosting

Post by PaxBritannia »

As some of you know, I will be getting a dedicated server in about half a year.

But since a few of us need hosting, and since none of us can use a whole server, why don't we share a dedicated server and split the cost.
This may seem weird, but during the development and testing stages, none of us actually need that much sys resources.

Any one interested / suggestions?

Hey pax, well I'm just going to tell you that idk that you will get to many people to buy it with you because most of us can spend that money and also most of us are maybe teenagers so older, but I hope you do get some, I know that I won't be able to, sorry :(

Are you planning on segmenting everyone off into separate VPSs?

Yes and no, the idea is that it will have everything you need for a PBBG: crons, SSH etc.

But it still can't do one or two things like reboot, since it isn't really a VPS: more of a fully-featured shared hosting.
Making it a vps wouldn't be viable: the costs are too large, and frankly, I haven't done it before. Plus, the idea for sharing a server is to spread the cost of maintaining a dedicated server, so we can actually test and play it online (in a private environment) without fear of breaking the TOC of most shared hosting accounts.

@Baseball: don't despair: i'm sure we could spare some space for you when we do get the server.

So you are going to have several in development browser-based games completing for a pool of resources in one environment?

What if someone really mucks something up, I've totally crashed my home development server several times working on a few things how would you deal with that? Wouldn't it be better to segregate people just a bit?
