My small draft of a small game world: Driftwurld

Have a project in the works but not much media? How about an idea you are turning into a project? Maybe a game design document you want to start with. This is the place.

Yay! Some updates. But can't test it today: I have to enter a short 1 day "crunch".
A few friends are visiting, and I want the map finished before that.

I'll test it the day after tomorrow.

Nice man.

I'll check it out when I get a bit of time. if you are interested I have a little code to make POST transactions with a graphic button that you create. I have been making mine in GIMP and using them in place of the "submit" type buttons. It's pretty much like you can do with normal GET links cept with POST method.

Nice it took me sec to get used to things with the changes but I think I see whats goin on. There was a big difference in moving along with the 4x weapon. Overall the options def do the job of making sure you pay attention to whats goin on. I missed a few times and got 1 shotted lol. Keep it goin man. Starting to look interesting.

Thanks Rastan! That's exactly what I'm shooting for, so you pay attention or otherwise you'll slip up (rather than other games where you sort of go into a clicking coma...). I enjoy that test of whether I'll click the right option, so it makes play fun for me, rather than play being something boring I do to get to some fun latter on.

And yeah, getting lucky and finding the 4x weapon makes you a bit of god for awhile, carving through stuff! What I like with the design is that I can give out the powerful weapon because it only lasts a while, so it wont make you god like/the game easy forever. In traditional designs, when you get a weapon you keep it forever, which either A: Makes the game to easy for the rest of it or B: They nerf down the weapon, so it isn't godly anymore. I like my middle ground :) I'm kinda surprised you got lucky and found a 4x! Lucky you!

Thanks for the encouragement!

Oh, I've put in a new paragraph to battle through. But that's not so much a game change as more pre written story to battle through.

I'm looking forward to when my php skills are strong enough to code the ability for players to determine how part of the story turns out!

Hi Halls and Spiritwebb,

Thanks for your posts! It's okay if no one posts, it's just that when someones a newbie php coder I think even if they only add a little bit to the tute, that should be encouraged, because usually it was alot of work for them (it was for me). You guys do that already, (especially you halls, I see alot of encouraging posts to various peoples threads) so I wasn't saying it about you, I just said it as a general principle of teaching. Again, thanks for your posts, they make good points! :)

Yeah I definitely failed back to the start a few times before finding that little $X damage toy. It can be brutal getting to the next part. I felt like I got the hang of it towards the end tho.

The first php I ever did was for a school project.

http://www.nothingbutmodeltrains.com/volcanoes_web/ I still remember the nights I spent on it. :lol:

Weird, I just went to upload a couple of things, expecting the online version would just work, and found this error when logging in
Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: open(/tmp/sess_bcdcc2aed783e4c37dd1a8f9db53c233, O_RDWR) failed: Read-only file system (30) in /home/a2890094/public_html/authenticate.php on line 3
Anyone know what's going on? I'd uploaded a new version of showing the story and a new file for highscores, neither of which should have touched anything about the games log in? I added some new entries to the database, but again I would have thought??? I wish I had checked it before I did anything, so I could rule out anything on my part.

I have never seen an error even remotely like that one before. Have you tried searching for:
Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]
or
failed: Read-only file system
The rest seems to be file and session-specific.

Heh, didn't think to search. One thing that came up suggests it could be a bad hard drive. Free host and a bad hard drive? Makes sense.

Edit: And now it's working again! I'll keep an eye out for how often it does this.

Thanks for looking, Jackolantern, I'd wondered if I'd stuffed something up! :)

I've migrated the server, since the freehosts extension of the day (it seems to change every so often) went from ones I didn't like to one that was okay.

I've also started using the projects name and edited into the title of this post (and edited the initial link):
Driftwurld!

All player accounts aught to have been migrated - I checked the database and they seem to have transfered (except for one peculularity, which isn't a value used in play anyway)

http://www.driftwurld.herobo.com/login.php

I'll delete the old one in a few days, once I'm happy the new copy will keep working.
