Lord of the Rings Online

Post by hallsofvallhalla »

Would love to rate this game but after hours of downloads and updating I have yet to even get to play. I just got into beta for F2P but it is saying it is another download....This is soooo stupid.

I am updating AGAIN...

I would have thought they'd have gone the route of wow and war, where they've made the initial download before you can play about 100 or 200 meg (well, I know war did that, and I heard wow did the same).

That initial wait before playing is so critical in terms of actually getting a new user.

One advantage of browser games, hehehe!

Did they do something different? I beta'd it at first and played for about 7-8 months.

It is probably peer-to-peer. Once WoW implemented their P2P update distribution system, almost every other company realized the bandwidth savings and followed along. However, there are downsides to P2P updating. Firewalls can get in the way, and if your update is going very slow, you can try lowering your firewall or giving the executable free access for the time it takes to update. A firewall issue won't shut it down per se, but it will make it run as slow as molasses. My first WoW update took me 4 hours to download 80mb on a 5mbps connection. It could also be that your ISP is not torrent-friendly, in which case there is not much you can do. WoW makes their patches available from third-party distributors, such as Fileplanet so you can get a typical FTP download if the P2P system is a problem for the user. But since this is a beta, I doubt there are other sources for the download.

oh my connection is very torrent friendly. I have altered my P2P port and ghosted it. I use to torrent about 4 gigs a night when Oink was around. Now the nights I do torrent which are becoming less I torrent about 4-8 gigs.

If it's still relatively new, perhaps there aren't many seeders out there (or whatever it's called)?

Come onto my connection for awhile, where a basic page takes a few seconds, and you'll probably start to feel better about 'how long it's taking' ;)
