First Impressions

Post by Mouff »

I've been working through the unity tutorials these last couple of days http://unity3d.com/support/resources/tutorials/ and only just finished the fps tutorial, and I got to admit I wish I never put of useing it in the first place (had it installed for about 8 months).

Over the last 2 years I've searched the net and found countless game engines but none as awesome nor as simple as what Unity seems to be. I sat in my little chair this morning and my initial thoughts where that I wasted 2 years of development working with what i think are over priced or over rated game engines. The only good I could think of was the countless assets I've aquired over the time in my little game development hobby.

So I've worked through several tutorials scoured the forums tried out several addons to help convert my RC project to Unity and I'm now 99% Unity is the engine for me. the only thing left to test is the networking side of things which from what i've read on the forums and seen in action will only add the extra push i'm sure I dont need to commit 100% :)

Well I've driveled on enough but I'd just like to add that if you have unity installed and not used or played around with it yet... DO SO NOW.:)

I must agree. Unity is by far the single best game engine I have used. Easy, powerful, cross-platform, and best of all free.

Even though I'm slowly moving towards my own game engine, I still use Unity for many projects and game prototypes. Definitely my favorite game engine :)

Thats all I use is Unity...Unity is by far the greatest for being free. I found it easy to use, and not only can you choose from 3 different languages to code in, your not limited to just one. In fact, you can use all 3 if you want too in one project...

Then there is the ease of creating the .exe file or the web file. No programming required there as it does it for you in just a few clicks...

I think one of the best things I've found with Unity, is the amount of resourses and tutorials avalible from other users. Being only a hobbiest I have limited to no experiance in any type of scritping language yet. I decided the first thing I wanted to work on was the camera controls and with a few searches on the web I found a tutorial for the exact camera controls I wanted for my game. simple yet easy enough to expand on.

I think this is one of the down falls for a few game engines out their, lack of detailed explanation or incomplete documentation.
