Post by Yourself »

Ok so me and a few friends wanted to create a Game like Club Penguin, Pandanda, Panfu, ECT. So we started a few days ago i was the only person that sort of knew action script ( buttons, animation, some other stuff) so i tryed to get my MC (MovieClip) to move to my Mouse when i click ( so when i click it, the movie clip will rotate and go down it will go down and when i click left it will rotate left and go that way) and i failed

So i was wondering if you could play club penguin for a little bit and Pandanda cause i wanna try to make it look a little bit 3D, and i need help with the action script, i have 2 very good Drawers in my Team one has a tablet for drawing so if anyone wants to help please please PM we want to release this before Christmas i want i lot of people to Join in. i dont know how to make a website so can some1 help me with that aswell thx

P.P.P.S What we want the features of the game to be:
Point and click to move character
Character looks at the mouse at most angles ( left, right , up, down, left-up, right-up, left-down, right-down) (when i say X-Up/Down i mean halfway in between)
Click a Building to enter
Buy clothes/items/furniture
Have a Tree house (house)
Have a Bag (inventory)

In order to build a MMORPG in flash, you need to be very proficient in AS2, and you need to have somebody that can write C++. Because most people build their servers with C++ then network them into the client with AS2, and that is an incredible task, and trying to build something like this with class mates is usually a very difficult undertaking, i know, i have tried.

But all is not lost, you said you had a couple of people that could draw well, and you can animate, well why not try to build a 2D MMORPG with the Eclipse Engine, http://freemmorpgmaker.com/index.php, you don't need to worry about the low level programming like the server or the client, you can just build.

If you started a project with that i may lend a helping hand.

Some other words of advice is to make a Game Design Document (GDD), and make sure that you project manage properly, i.e. Draw up lists of game assets that need building, and set the Environment Designers tasks etc. So the project moves forward.
Skillset: C/C++, OpenGL, C#, Lua, PHP, MySql, Web Dev etc.

A word of advice: read ActionScript for Multiplayer Games and Virtual Worlds. Before you get it, know this: it does not build a Flash MMO step-by-step from scratch. No book does, or can. What it does do is show you some very important parts of making a Flash MMO that are stumbling blocks for most people. It also shows you how to use a third-party server, which is what puts this a bit on this side of possible (without a 3rd party server, this really is basically an impossible amount of super-complex work). However, to use this book you will need to upgrade to a version of Flash that uses AS3.
