Like most tools, in the right hands Game Maker can be a wonderful engine. My favorite Game Maker..umm..game maker is Cactus Milk. He has made some of the most amazing indie games I have ever played, and regularly wins out over "deeper" engine users in indie game competitions. I highly suggest checking out Ad Naseum 2 and Psychosomnium (the latter is a very memorable and amazing game).

I started game development with Game Maker 6, and have used it in a couple tiny games.

It doesn't suit me, so I'm making my own tool for personal use, but I recommend it for most pixel-art games.

Gamemaker doesn't translate very well to "classical" game development. On the upside, however, it does translate fairly well to Flash, so if someone starts with GM, they can move on to making Flash games from there if they wanted to.
