i am quite sure the weapons and armor add to your stats during battle. Not to the stats on the sidebar.

yes, when equipping the weapons and armor it does not add to your attack and defense. Instead when attacking it queries the weapons and uses that data in the attack. This is the way it was setup. It is still adding to your attack, just during battle.
If you want it to actually add something to the players attack on the bar then you will need to set it up to do that. Have it add it and take it out when you equip the weapon. But then you will need to change the attack script as well.

are you querying the weapon first? Also why are you adding damage to attack?
