Lookign for an MMO tp play

Post by hallsofvallhalla »

Looking for a 3d mmo. One where I can play casually and not pay $15 a month for. Also one good for solo. If you are going to suggest a private server or EMU then do it in a IM not on the forums.

Tried out EQ private and real server but just could not get into it.

I've said it once, and will say it again, Runes of Magic is one of the better F2P MMORPGs if you are looking for something in the style of commercial boxed MMORPGs like EQ1, EQ2, WoW, LorRO, etc. But speaking of LotRO, I have not tried the new F2P reboot of that game. I liked it when I played it P2P, but I heard that the F2P portion is only the first 20 or 30 levels. I am not sure if it is still like that, though.

That is incredibly lame. I am getting sick of lazy live teams who won't repackage their initial installation once the patched get to be 1gb+.

Is it peer-to-peer? If so then it should speed up after a bit of time. If you have high speed internet, I can't imagine it would take 3 days to patch. That would be hundreds and hundreds of gigs. It is probably just really slow in the start, like the old WoW patcher, but then it speeds up 100x over about 30 minutes or so.

it wasn't actually full time downloading. The speed was slow and once one patch finished you had to click play again then it would patch again. So i would leave it then come back and have to start again and so on. Was around 10 gigs i think which will take some time. Not worth it in my opinion. Same reason i will not play the free version of WOW. This was quite a few months ago though so not sure if it is still that way. Also the F2P servers were slow and over crowded then as well. Same went for D&D online.

Well I know you said 3D, but if you don't mind playing a nice 2D game you should definitely try out Haven and Hearth. Lots of fun, plus it's made by indies!

Well, to be fair I don't think the live teams just decide what they are going to do each day. They've probably pitched it to the relatively ignorant higher ups, who went "What? Pay thousands in wages to repackage an instillation? It still works, don't it!? Denied!"

I think patching/downloading a many patched game is a real issue for getting people into the game (as demonstrated here). With warhammer, they had a lite client which patched in things latter (as the heaviest components are the sound and graphics, which are kinda modular I'd guess).

Speaking of, I found warhammer to be a really fun endless trial - played it a ton! Made tons of characters on both sides!

While I guess I don't know 100%, it doesn't seem like it should be that difficult to simply repackage an updated client with the installer. Blizzard always has the updated client as the installer on battle.net. But then again, I have worked in large-scale business, and I know how these things go, and I can definitely appreciate what you are saying. Sometimes simple decisions that would take one person an hour to do on their own PC can become meetings, which can become risk management profiles, which can be exploratory projects, which all turn into nothing.

Blizzard now has the free WOW and it is a 11 gig file. Crazy!
