World of Warcraft/ Elder Scrolls Hybrid

Post by Xandric96 »

Hey once again. I have seen what a few people said on my "what would you like to see in an mmo" topic [at the bottom] and I have begun to put the pieces together. I have decided to make a World of Warcraft/ Elder Scrolls Hybrid. I want to rid of the character classes, the action bar and the mindless clicking and button pressing and instead replace these things with some systems from the elder scrolls games. Here are my ideas. Feel free to comment, add and give your opinions.

Using the mouse to perform attacks
It would make combat feel more simple and at the same time more realistic. I think that doing this would bring the RPG into MMORPG. Maybe holding your mouse click for longer would make for more devastating attacks and spells?

Have a 3rd person view but still have the cross-hairs to interact
I thought it would be cool to actually shoot arrows from a bow in real time using cross-hairs, to kill enemy players, bandits, or unsuspecting towns people; or pick up rare leaves and flowers from the wild to make into amazing potions using my "hands". This element would immerse you but would still make you feel in control not to mention this system would be in an MMORPG environment and setting.

Realistic NPCs and Enemy Mobs
I played WoW the other day and saw that in the forest, there are hundreds of wolves crossing each other and doing their thing. I walked outside into my wooded backyard and saw a squirrel here and there. This made me think that forests should feel like forests. There should only be a few wolves and a few wildlife. It would make killing wolves and bears more rewarding when you stumble upon one. This also applies for every environment in the game.

On the same but different note, when you attack a bandit, you shouldn't know what his arsenal is. You shouldn't know what attacks he will use or what tricks he has up his sleeve. Knowing a boss's or even a trash mob's AI ruins MMO's for me. There is no mysticism and leaves nothing for the imagination. I think it would be excited and would make players pay more attention if they must be aware and be optimistic about what their enemy has that can kill them.

Reasonable Quests (please for god's sake)
I hate when I reach a cliffhanger in WoW and it gives me a quest that ends that when I also get another quest that tells me to kill 10 Owls. Its anticlimactic and just plain stupid. Quests should not be the main source of gaining experience and leveling. Yes, quests will immerse you and will be fun but you will NOT get millions of them, not to mention ones that keep telling you to kill, kill, kill, kill, KILL, KILL, KILL SOME MORE! KEEP KILLING! KILL AGAIN! The pattern here is to make the game as realistic and as reasonable as possible, as to not annoy the player.

A Non Linear Game (but still not a sandbox)
It would be nice to have some direction (if wanted) but to not just be left to die without tutorials or a since of lore and story. When i start out, i may want to help kill the Orcs at this abbey. THATS COOL! but if i want, i can also skip that, go to another town and help hunt for pelts so townsfolk won't freeze during the winter. This is what i mean. Either way, you will be rewarded the same.

Conclusion (sorry for the rant)
The list of things to change could and would go on but I will spare you. I am working on a document to assess these changes I want to make. I hope this shows the direction I am pointing in and I hope this direction is that of what fellow MMO players want in a fun and still challenging online role-playing game. Please tell me your thoughts on this topic and feel free to add something or say what you would like to see different.

The OuterNet * VirtualWorlds game my team and I are working on, we have removed the classes and races feature, the quests are there if you want to do them, but doesn't matter, as we have removed the leveling up as well. Doing the quests gives items and money to upgrade your character or player ship! There are still EvP and PvP. Where on the planets EvP takes place, and in space PvP takes place! :) With this also, if you wish to PvP against another player you can, since there is no leveling, there is no "penalty" so to speak when doing so. Anyone is open game in space!

I would avoid making not annoying the player a goal.

Sounds funny, doesn't it? But not annoying a player doesn't actually get you anywhere. They just aren't annoyed. That doesn't mean they are having fun.

The second step of that is to recognise that there isn't just one fun in the world - there are many types of fun, and some of them conflict with each other. One mans treasure/fun is another mans trash/annoying.

Just don't break your back trying to bend over backwards for everyone, as what some people want is what other people hate.
