Story Lines

Post by Nexus »

Hey I just thought of this after going over and playing and finishing the entire Fallout Series finally and realized how deep and amazing the story line and all that other good stuff, but what makes it tick for you in a story line to make you enjoy it to it's fullest extent? What are your favorite games with your favorite style of story line? Mine is the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series, just thinking about the sheer time and imagination needed to create such great epic story lines absolutely fascinates me. They also inspire me to put a lot more time and effort into creating story lines for my games that I am making. I would love to hear your favorites and why you enjoy them! :)

Well this isn't a game, but admittedly I am a huge harry potter nerd (6 MORE FREAKING DAYS) :) and I find the entire Harry Potter series to be AMAZINGLY intriquite, with very few, if not no "holes" in its story. As far as games go, I haven't really come across any I don't think where the story line blew me away. I find great inspiration though whenever I read or play something with even a decent story line to make my own, and currently (I am actually about to reveal my new game after this post, lol) I am making a game that doesn't use my own story line, but rather immerses you into an already created story line, because as anyone knows, creating a very in depth story line is extremely satisfying if completed, but very difficult to accomplish. Thus, I will be re-creating the Harry Potter experience in an MMORPG :)

Yes very few holes in it is a necessity for it to be good, I also enjoy stories where the protagonist has the choice between good and evil and stuff like that where it makes you think what would happen if they would have chosen whatever path they didn't and how that would change the outcome.

Battle for Wesnoth is an awesome storyboarding tool, lettign you do all kinds of experiments on how much storyline players will tolerate and how much action it takes to get them to actually bother "wading through all that stupid storyline stuff" as many who like action tend to seem to think of storyline.

It lets you lay out storylines, in fact it it almost a kind of computer aided instruction system where you could step through entire lessons if you wanted to, interspersed with action sequences where you get to move a character or numerous characters around to fight battles or solve quests or whatever.

I highly recommend that you try out your storylines using that tool before bothering trying to go to a real-time or three-D implementation of your story, since it is a much much easier tool to do your initial storyboarding in a playable manner with.

By deploying Battle for Wesnoth campaigns of your storylines, you can get feedback on the story that includes being able to have action interspersed to make it an actual game not just a choose which path the hero takes novel kind of thing. So you can get at least some idea of how importan action is compared to story in actually drawing people into your story and motivating them to actually go through the entire story...

(It is also great for providing deep background for any game by creating historical re-enactments allowing people to play through events that actually occurred in your game-universe already...)

Please note the date of the last post in a thread and only post in threads from within the last 2 months or so. If a thread is older than that but you want to comment on it, please start a new thread about the topic (you can put a link to the original thread if you wanted to directly reference anything in it). This keeps people from thinking that older parts of the thread are new and directly responding to them.

Thee best story line ever is The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time, I loved so much the gameplay, the music and the epic story. I wanna warp back to 1998 8-)
