Kony 2012

Post by Chris »

After the last thread that hit the community, I felt I'd post this video for the the people and search engine bots who haven't already come across it. Puts a smile on my face knowing there are still people out there who care about their fellow being and not only finances.

It is crazy how fast this caught wild fire. It was on all of the national news last night and the night before. It really shows how the internet lets the popular interest of the people dictate the direction of the media and government. With view and hit counters, those not covering massive internet trends are seen as falling behind, or being blind.

I'm part of the Invisible Children club at my school and last year we raised enough money to organize an assembly where 4 people from Uganda and one of the original founders of Invisible Children(The main people behind Kony 2012) came to our school, talked and showed a video. Its crazy how famous its gotten because last year hardly anyone knew about Invisible children or Kony. Sadly I haven't been able to be as active in the club as I was last year due to the crazy workload I have from the classes i'm taking this year but still, its great its finally getting noticed :)

I had heard of Invisible Children, mostly due to Darfur and the Janjaweed's use of children officers and soldiers. It is a great initiative. I had actually heard somewhat of Joseph Koney before, too, in a list late last year of a list of the world's most dangerous people. But this is going to raise the heat.

Yeah, the Ugandan government are definitely not saints. The current president also has accusations of enlisting children to fight and die for him. Kony has just enlisted many more than he has, so I guess he is the larger of two evils.

Not to be controversial here, but I actually am sort of against this whole Kony 2012 thing. I fully support the cause, and Kony should rot in hell, but this just goes to show tht people don't care about things unless it's waved in front of their face. Furthermore, it's my belief that we as Americans (I know not everyone here lives in America) need to stop policing the world and start solving our own problems. We are going nowhere but down right now as a country, and saving some children is nice, but that needs to be secondary in my opinion. Lastly, it REALLY irritates me that this is the only thin that people really care about. There are so many world-wide crisis that are unheard of, as this was until recently, and they get no support. Even major things such as Chernobyl: why does no one presently do anything to contribute to all of those with genetic mutations/terminal diseases as a result of the radiaoon from the nuclear explosion, which will affect generation after generation in eastern Europe and western Russia, but all of this is of no concern to anyone.

Anyways, sorry if that offended any of you heavy supporters of Kony 2012, but I felt the need to put that opinion out there, as it is one that so few people seem to be able to understand unfortunately :/
