Ludum Dare 24!

Post by mattykins »

Wish me luck! Ludum dare 24 starts in less than 3 hours!

For those who don't know Ludum dare is a 48hour game development competition. Everyone votes on a theme in the weeks prior to the competition, and 1000+ people make a game based on that theme! Its really exciting. Last time I failed, but this time I won't! (hopefully) If anyone is interested to join up last minute head over to http://www.ludumdare.com/, and signup!

I'll post a link to my game and timelapse video when I'm done :)

When you say you "failed", do you mean you didn't win (is there even a winner?) or that you couldn't get it completed? If you mean the former, than I wouldn't feel bad, as it must be difficult to stand out in a field of 1000+ games. If the latter, it probably just means you were aiming a bit too complex for the time scale. Most completed LD games I have played are fairly simple.

Best of luck with it! 8-)

I meant the latter as in not completed :)

But the theme this time is: Evolution!

So i'm doing a shmup (think touhou or 19xx), but with a twist. You upgrade along a binary skill tree so each levelup you have 2 and only 2 different choices.

Sounds cool, but also a bit complex for such a short time period. If you can pull it off, it sounds awesome :D

Be cool if you had it that enemy ships sometimes become disabled instead of exploding - you have to avoid shooting them by accident, because the type of enemy ship you run into and collect determines the evolution of your own ship.

Callan: That sounds cool I might implement that.

But update for tonight! I just finished a solid 4 hours of work on it and the engine is nearly complete, it looks like crap but hey, a lot of the code is written :D

Now to design the levels and make it look pretty :D

It's funny - do I ask how it's going, thus using up the limited time you have? Or do nothing to encourage, so as to encourage! :o

Hey guys! So I finished! I'm a little late to update this forum post as the competition ended Sunday but nevertheless I was successful!
(Kind of)

It didn't turn out as good as I imagined but hey, I had fun! Its a shmup based on evolution, and depending on what enemies you kill different stats will level up(I played off of someones idea here! I'm in the middle of writing the post so I can't look at who's idea it was but thanks :) ) I recorded a timelapse and I will upload that to Youtube and link to it at some point in the near future.

You can play the game at: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-da ... &uid=10730
I only released a windows build and the source but my friend ran it through wine and said it worked but the sound effects were reaalllyyy laggy and bad. Also if you have python/pygame/pyopengl installed you can build it yourself :)
