Any other C++ programmers out there?

Post by Shihonoryu »

Hey guys, with a ton of PHP users. and most of this forum being web development, i was wondering if there were any C++ programmers here.

Ive been with C++ for about 2-3 years now. i love her. and she makes me sandwich's.(when i ask nicely and correctly) but she likes to complain a lot when i say the wrong things.

But anyway...

I have a new project out. to make my own engine from scratch using C++ Irrlicht. not sure what its gonna be yet. but the actual goal is far away. i have yet to fully learn Irrlicht but i intend to make some smaller engines. until i can fully understand the language.

Anyone else here have any C++ projects?

I've been programming in c++ for the past 3-4 years, and i created various simple games with it (2D), i even made my own 2D Platform engine using Allegro.

But now, im into Unity3D and PHP only.. But i don't forget c++ ofc.

My dream is to get into C++ hardware programming. Like building boards then making the programs for them but I have no idea where to even start.

I really can't say I have liked C++ much, but I have used it several times and know it OK. Now I have been thoroughly spoiled by managed languages, and it is tough to drop back down to that level, and have to worry about how big an int is on this or that platform, or having to come up with a pattern to manage your memory. :|

Ive never really worried about how big my int's are or memory too much, just gotta remember to delete the memory you use off the heap :p

The only time the varying sizes of the primitive types matters is for larger numbers that come close to the maximum. If you think you have so much room, but on a platform you aren't testing for you only have half that size, that will cause errors you didn't foresee. Obviously this used to be a larger issue than it is today, and manual memory management and coercion-happy control structures still tend to top the list of single-threaded issues that cause problems for C++ programmers.

I guess another reason why I lost interest in C++ is that its usage areas have been shrinking over the years. It still reins supreme for high performance desktop games, but that just isn't what I have been working with the last few years. It doesn't have a solid, modern way to be used for web development, not a ton of ways to use it in modern mobile devices (regular C can be used in Android, but few people seem to be using it outside of OpenGL game development) and obviously it doesn't work in the browser (but of course most languages fall into that category too when you take out the plugins). C++ is great for its solid use cases, and when you need it, you need it, but I just haven't been in a position to be needing it or really even able to use it at all the last couple of years. :|
