A duke nukem fan game?

Post by rockinliam »

Would it be worth it? now with the demise of 3DRealms?
Since duke nukem is probably the best FPS character ever, wud it be a good idea to build some sort of fresh fan game and bring him back to life?
Named possibly Duke Nukem Never?
On FPSC X10 possibly?

Just an idea :ugeek:

p.s. Does anyone have a clue what im ramblin on about ? or do my words mystify you? LOL

I would not suggest it. Just because the company is gone does not mean that the property does not belong to anyone anymore. For example, Valve could not just release a Duke Nukem game now that the company has gone under. Believe me, there is still someone who owns it and would want a whole lot of money for it. And it doesn't matter that the game is free, either. A Chrono Trigger fan game got shut down just a month or two ago, even though it was going to be free.

Your best bet? Don't assume they won't care; find out! Just do some research to see who still owns the rights, and shoot them off an email asking them if they would mind. You will need something in writing. It wouldn't take but an hour or so to do, and if they allow it, you can do it. If they say no, you know where you stand (aka don't dare make it).

And as Halls said, don't mess with copyrighted material like that. Even if you don't charge a cent for the game, you could get raked over in court that you did "intellectual property damage", and now you owe several hundred thousand dollars or more (or as Halls said, your parents will if you are under 18). They don't play with this stuff.

Ahhh, ok. Well, there you go. The original IP holder still holds the IP. I was just going by what the OP said.

But can you imagine how much attention they would get if Duke Nukem Forever launched tomorrow with DirextX 10 graphics, a solid engine, etc.? Almost every gamer in the world would at least try it out just to see what the commotion in the game industry was about.
