Alternatives To YouTube...

Post by Sharlenwar »

Here is a question to ponder for all of you! What alternatives are there to YouTube?

P.S. I have done some research into this and have found alternatives, I just want to see what all of you have discovered. :D

Why would you need an alternative?

Well, some people might not agree to the way YouTube might handle certain content. Maybe some alternative that isn't so laden with advertising. Maybe even a pay service that then has no ads.

Why always use the mainstream?

I see, just curious. I am not a fan of how youtube works either. Counting a hit for even 1 second of watching or not deleting videos after so many thumbs down. That is why those stupid rick videos get so many hits and the ghoul screaming to scare you.

Vimeo is the only alternative where your content even has a chance of being seen. There are countless competitors, but they have no viewers.

I am really torn on YouTube. On the one hand, their content policy seems draconian, but then if you go check out any of the smaller alternative "free for all" video upload sites, they just become filled with trailers for pornos, traffic-grabbers for porn sites, and scam ads. And I mean 100% filled with that. In just a couple of days. So I kind of understand why they are so harsh with it, so that it stays a place where people would want to dig around and watch videos. It is hard to balance that with the nearly 100% user-uploaded content.

As far as the ads, a lot of that are the channel partners, which make money for the uploader. If you don't monetize your channel at all, ads appear almost like the old days, where maybe 1 in 20 views will have an ad. It is just now that everyone and their father are trying to monetize their channels after a few big name channels released videos telling everyone "you can make thousands of bucks like me". But obviously they don't, since they only get a thousand views or so, and instead just cover all of YouTube with a thick film of ads for their checks of $5 and $6 each.

Thanks for that Jack. I understand what you see and how you see it all. It is disappointing that no one has really tried to break away from YouTube and to try and create something different from the norm. I don't mind using YouTube, as I have in the past and continue to do so. I was just wondering if there was anything that I missed out there and if someone has discovered something that I haven't. :D

As much as everything changes, nothing really does.

Unfortunately or fortunately (of how you look at it), the Internet is essentially one large online mall. If looking for online auctions or flee market, well there is E-Bay as the major department store to the East. If looking for another auction site... not likely to find one or where most people will being going.

I do like YouTube in a business sense that it is easy to plug in and rely on their service/bandwidth for hosting videos at a site.
But to go looking around or such, I pretty much already filter things out before clicking on play or the first 10 seconds determines if I continue or skip.

You're right, the mainstream websites take all the load when some new opens, either it's a big success or a big fail.
