I'm actually liking Windows 8

I got my new pc on Monday... And i must say, im impressed.

I haven't done much, true, but i like the shortcuts and the looks its just a matter of time to get used to.
The only thing i've seen and disliked is that it's hard to close apps for real. There's no X or minimize button ... just the old Alt F4

The thing i like most in the metro start menu is the apps that you can open in a touch of a button (or a finger my ultrabook has touch screen) like EMail, apps, internet, skydrive, weather, news etc.

I know some of you dislike the new metro menu, but give it a chance guys... It's not that bad

My wife loves Metro, but she has an i5 tablet. I have to admit, when I am on her tablet, the Metro interface is quite awesome. But it just doesn't translate to a keyboard and mouse. And removing the Start Button was a misstep and the 8.1 "Start" is not going to fix it.

If you are going to be doing serious work on the desktop, you absolutely need a Start Button replacement. But once you have that, desktop Windows 8 rocks.

I feel empty without that start button yes, but i think i am liking it due to the fact that i have a touch screen (i barely use it lol) but like halls said, in a week i probably will hate it...

I do start to think that for now, it was a overkill since i will do very little programming here actually... but a laptop is nice, a laptop that weighs less than a college book is pefect.

Not really. Underneath the surface, the kernel has been largely re-written and locked up tight as a vault. Windows finally has kernel security comparable to OSX and Linux. Boot-up times have been vastly decreased due to some creative disk work. Windows finally has a competent anti-virus built-in that works very well with the new core security model. Compatibility mode actually works for the first time ever, allowing older programs to run the way they were supposed to on Windows 7 (but never did). Networking has been vastly upgraded, and Home Group is finally not a stinking pile of garbage like it was before (no more constant disconnects caused by a bug in the exploration service; it was re-written).

I will agree with you that I don't really care for the way it looks at times, and I also did not like how some common file types were associated to Metro apps out-of-the-box (but that takes less than a minute to fix), but those are skin-deep. At its core, desktop has gotten a ton of love in Windows 8.

I will also give you that the media-disc playing tools being gone can be annoying to some people (why not leave them in?), but I just think it is a reaction to disc-based media disappearing. I have to say I haven't played a single media disc in over 2 years. But again, I will give you your irritation on that, because they should have given people the choice without making them get a 3rd party app or finding the MS option elsewhere.

@Vitinho: Seriously, get Pokki, which I linked above as a Start Button replacement. It is actually much better than the standard Windows < 7 Start Button. I am now hoping MS doesn't re-add it so I can keep using Pokki's.

I don't know if it boots faster because it's a new pc, or because of windows 8, but it sure does. I get the login screen in about 3 secs (with bios loading screen).

That disc thing, what you mean by media-disc playing tools? Media player? Did microsoft gave up on that?

It boots faster because of Windows 8 (and probably to some degree because it is new). In Windows 8, when you turn the computer off, settings and state are recorded to the HDD, where they are reinstated when it is turned back on. This vastly speeds up booting. My SSD ultrabook goes from cold boot to being fully functional in right about 3 seconds

Windows Media Player is still there and fine. Earlier versions of Windows had another program that was specific for working with DVDs. I can't remember what it was called. You can still play them with Media Player I think, but it is not as elegant. But regardless, VLC is the best media player for every OS hands-down, so it is really a moot point.

I found out other flaw on Windows 8. I don't like how they turned every single thing about windows simple. In my case, i want to connect to a wifi network, but it doesn't let me... It's just saying "windows can't connect" and i have like 4 bars of it... I think there's some configs behind it since i can connect with my android, but windows 8 doesn't let me make that configs...

What im trying to say is that windows 8 turned everything into one-click-button in my opinion.
