Are these "torrent" things legal?
Lately I've been trying to play my old Civilization II Multiplayer Gold Edition, but I'm finding that it doesn't work on Vista (specifically, it crashes whenever I try to build a city). So I tried googling to find solutions, and I found a couple of these "torrent" things that claim that you can download the game (for free) from them, and that their version is Vista compatible.

Is this legal? The name "torrent" sounds like something illegal, but I technically already have the game and it was legally purchased, so...

eh is speeding legal? so are you saying you never go over the speed limit at all? Is spilling gas on the ground legal? so you have never missed a drop?
some torrents are legal some are not. If you already owned the game then I don't see the issue.
use utorrent as your torrenter and then use piratebay or demonoid to ge the torrents. I am not promoting torrenting but not all torrents are illegal. Some indie games actually use torrents to download their games.

Ok, so utorrent is the site I need to go to? Er, wait, I use utorrnent as my torrenter, and then piratebay to get the torrents? What's a "torrenter" if it's not the place I'm getting my torrent from? Do I need to donwload a program or something to be able to download torrents?some torrents are legal some are not. If you already owned the game then I don't see the issue.

A torrent is a file that redirects where you download from basically. It isn't like clicking 'Download' off of Turbosquid (where their files are stored on their server) torrents use a variety of places to get the files.
UTorrent is a program that is free that you download. It is very simple to use. This program basically takes the downloaded torrent and starts downloading it for you. Then you can just leave and come back whenever and check how long is left or if it's finished. It is basically like using Limewire but alot safer and uses torrents instead of search phrases.
If you have any questions about how to use UTorrent or anything like that let me know, I can help you out.

Ok, so where do I get this utorrent thing and how do I use it?
EDIT: Ok, I got it downloaded... it wants to know stuff about my upload speed (no idea what any of it means), and it needs to know a port or something... I tried clicking the button to test the port, and it said that the port was closed. What does that mean and what do I do?

EDIT: Someone just told me that torrents were an excellent way to get viruses, as you can't get information on the pedigree of the file you're downloading. Is this true?

if you are a complete dummy that doesnt know what to download and tries to download movies before they are released or games like fallout 3 and the file is only 5 megs then yes you will get a virus. If you are smart and read the comments and be watchful then no you will never get a virus. I have been torrenting for over 4 years and have never got a single virus. I have probably uploaded and download over 50tb.

Ok, so what do I tell it for the port and upload speed and such?
And how do I download torrents with it? Is there a download button or something on the page with the file I'm downloading, or is there some special process I go through?
