Anyone getting FFXIII?

Post by Jackolantern »

I am on the fence, but am considering getting it on the PS3. It looks very neat :)

I've gotten tired of Final Fantasy. To me it seems like they are all the same, with some small differences (gameplay wise)

If it gets really good reviews, as in a 95 or higher on Metacritic, then I'll probably buy it. Otherwise, I don't think I'll even consider it.

To me they have all seemed extremely different; probably more so than almost any other long-running series. Consider Madden 09 to Madden 10. Hardly anything changed, yet the new version still costs $60. FFXIII has a completely different cast in a completely different world with a completely different battle and advancement system. I don't think it is going to resemble FFXII at all.

I agree, FF is definitely the most creative long-running game series, and it was love at first sight when I first played FFVII out of curiosity (yes, VII was my first title).

The reason I'll probably not get XIII is that I don't own any seventh generation console, and I'm actually rather unimpressed with the titles available for either one of them.

I don't know if it is just me or if a new PC gaming era is rising.

I have it, infact I'm on chapter 11 of 13(I think there is 13 atleast, could be more). Haven't played it for a while since I've been busy but I recommend getting it, once again their combat system is badass. HOORAY FOR NO MANA (MP)! XIII is much better than XII in my opinion, not better than 10 or 7 though, but still very strong to be able to get compaired to them.

But I'm a Fanboy so who knows.

I am actually a bit unhappy with this FF. Yeah, the summons are kind of silly, but there is much more wrong here. It just feels like you are running down hall after hall, fighting battle after battle while raising your character's "chrystalis" leveling system in a nearly linear fashion until you hit a cutscene. After the cutscene, you will be back in another hall to run down and fight. It is just kind of jarring how fenced in this FF is after how open FFXII was. I think the perfect FFIII would have been the characters of XIII, battle system of XIII (which does definitely rock), with the world structuring, openess and pacing of XII.

However, as has already been touched on, there are some great changes in FFXIII which I think will go a long way towards reinventing the series outside of Japan. As has already been said, there is no MP. You can always cast any spell, and instead of having a finite resource, stronger spells require more of your ATB bar, which gets used up as you act. You also completely heal up after each battle, so no need to waste potions healing up your troops after a tough fight. Speaking of which, each potion also immediately heals everyone in your party equally, so "potion juggling" is a thing of the past. The ATB gauge also fills up very quickly, so there is no more standing around waiting for your turn. It is much closer to an MMO-ish turn time-frame, so you probably won't be staring at your character waiting for them to act; through most of the game, as soon as you have chosen your tactics (you choose several at a time to fill up your ATB gauge) you will be near ready to attack again. SE also did a good job of making sure you would not get stuck in dungeons anymore, potionless and unable to move forward or backward: save points are plentiful and you can remotely buy potions, phoenix downs and other items from any save location.

So for the glaring problems that FFXIII has, it does do a lot to push the JRPG genre forward, out of the past that most of the current-day games are stuck in that makes them now so hated outside Japan these days. I will definitely be looking forward to what they do with FFXV (the next single-player game) :)

Chapter 11 is when you get to do free roam. And they throw ALOT at you, same with the post-game.

Bahamut has been in nearly every FF.

I just wish they would find a storyline and stick with it instead of all this back and forth wishy washy no FF matches the other one crap. The storylines are getting more and more out there. FFX was the worst. God what a bad storyline. I miss FF 1-3. Now those were kewl :)

How many Finals can a fantasy have? :)
